OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM NEW MEXICO UNITED REGARDING THE SCHMIDT FAMILY TRAGEDY
ALBUQUERQUE, NM (May 2, 2019) Our hearts go out to our hometown teammate and defender, Justin Schmidt, who lost his father in an automobile accident near Medicine Bow, Wyoming last Saturday night. Justin’s mother, who was also badly injured in the accident, continues to recover at the Wyoming Medical Center. Justin Schmidt has been a powerful and positive member of our team, and our thoughts and prayers are with Justin and his entire family.
“We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of Justin Schmidt’s father, Jonathan David Schmidt. Undoubtedly, this is an extremely difficult time for the Schmidt family and while we can’t remove the pain associated with this tragedy, we can provide great support and comfort,” said Head Coach Troy Lesesne. “The culture and community of our club is something we all take great pride in and it’s in times like these that we band together even more as a support system for one of our own during his time of need. We love you, Justin!”
“We are shaken and saddened by the news of Jonathan Schmidt’s accident and passing. Our team and our entire community stand with Justin and his family. We are praying for his mother, Jeaneece Schmidt, and will do everything we can to support her full recovery,” said New Mexico United Owner and CEO Peter Trevisani.
New Mexico United players plan to play in honor of the Schmidt family at Sunday’s Cinco de Mayo match. Players will be wearing armbands in unity with their teammate.
